SPACE: POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE

Use of Space in Graphic Design

In page layoutillustration and sculpturewhite space is often referred to as negative space. It is the portion of a page left unmarked: marginsgutters, and space between columns, lines of type, graphics, figures, or objects drawn or depicted. The term arises from graphic design practice, where printing processes generally use white paper. White space should not be considered merely 'blank' space — it is an important element of design which enables the objects in it to exist at all; the balance between positive (or non-white) and the use of negative spaces is key to aesthetic composition. Inexpert use of white space, however, can make a page appear incomplete.

There are two types of white spaces.

  • 1.Active White Space: Space intentionally left blank for a better structure and layout. It also gives emphasis to the content area. It leads a reader from one element to another.
  • 2.Passive White Space: Empty space around the outside of the page or blank areas inside the content which is the by product of the layout process.
  • There are many good reasons to use white, ether as print or space in a design.
  • White space attracts the eye in a positive way. Our eyes are drawn to the light,  White is also used to balance. The dark is defined by the white. In text, it improves readability. In objects it provides emphasis and directs a focus. In both text and illustrations, white acts as a separator.
